The Junior Lifeguard program in Avila Beach is underway with 150 or so youngsters learning the skills that may one day save your life! The five week course is sponsored by the Avila Beach Community Foundation and several local businesses, costs $400, and is free for children living in Avila.
The program started in 2001 and has grown to become one of the central coast’s most prestigious day camp for kids. Seven lifeguards and ten aides teach lifeguard skills including CPR, and the course also includes outrigging, kayaking, surfing and sailing lessons!
Students train three hours a day, five days a week. Next week, the junior lifeguards will take part in a competition in Pismo Beach, followed by one in Carpenteria, with the goal to win the State championships held in July.
